I put a beer in the fermenter last week. When this cold hits it looks like I will be kegging up some really cold hefeweizen beer. It will be right at the two week mark. Perfect timing for adding carbonation. Cold liquid absorbs more CO2 according to Tony Heller.
I have been watching the approaching cold from Canada. It seems the US National Weather Service is not agreeing with how cold it will be this coming Sunday morning. The same with Accuweather forecasts. Has anyone noticed that Accuweather seems to under report the cold snaps, or seems to doctor the data that gets actually archived from the previous years? I have 5 vehicles that I checked the antifreeze. All were good to -40F. I will stack firewood the next couple days close to the wood stove. I actually pray we don’t have the -40 F wind chill.
Intense High Pressure area in the Arctic above Canada this weekend going down into Canada, US. Low Pressure builds over the Great Lakes Saturday. Another Hurricane in the Bering Sea at the same time.
Tornado watch today SE US. Low Pressure over the Great Lakes. Heat rising up into a Hurricane S of Greenland now Gusting 120mph on S Greenland. https://www.windy.com/-Show—add-more-layers/overlays?pressure,2024011306,66.964,-90.439,3,i:pressure,m:fIdac7u

We are expecting to see -22F by Monday if predictions hold up here in Casper, Wyoming. My worst winter so far was in 2005 where we experienced a very educational -40F for about two weeks straight. It’s been a mild winter so far.
Have to smile at the Ice extent side bar – multi year highs for the time of year. The Nasa page it is taken from starts with:
“The sea ice cover is one of the key components of the polar climate system. It has been a focus of attention in recent years, largely because of a strong decrease in the Arctic sea ice cover …”

02:22AM, 1/10/24. It’s still a blizzard in the mountains on the West Coast USA and has been since Monday night. Stevens Pass Interstate Highway 2 has been closed since yesterday. If you look at the SO2 Map on Windy.com, the snow is from volcanos. Switch the Map to PM2.5, particulates 2.5 microns. A steady stream of PM2.5 hitting the West Coast as heavy snow, from volcanos.
The East Coast storm had two tornados yesterday in Florida, heavy rain going up the US. Heat rising enough to cause tornados and the Mexi volcano is at the base of the system if you look on the Windy.com SO2 Map. Same pattern for years now. The systems go to the EU where they get renamed some silly name and then blame them on climate change. Quite a process.

The first single digit F temps happen at my area this week and this is not yet into the arctic outbreaks.
I wouldn’t be surprised to have sub-zero F temps here when the invasion of really cold air gets here in earnest.
